Chapter Thirteen

Kira could see the disappointment on Franklin’s face once Gail had entered the room. This whole thing with her aunt was still causing uneasy feelings and emotional harm after all these years. Once they were on the main floor, she promised Gail that she’d come to her office so that they could talk.

“It’s getting late, so we’ll just talk in the morning while we go through the attic,” Gail said. “Good night, Franklin,” she said before leaving.

Kira went to Franklin. “I’m so sorry. You know, we can go back up there if you want.”

“She’s right, let’s wait until tomorrow.” Franklin gave her a quick hug and then left.

She rushed behind him. “Can we have dinner tomorrow?”

Franklin turned around, walking backward down the walkway. “Yes, looking forward to it.”

She watched him until he disappeared into the night. After everything he’d done for her and her family, she owed it to Franklin to help get answers about his father. Kira was just worried that what they found out would only make things worse between them.

On her way to her office, she spotted Mrs. Potter coming down the hall.

“I’m surprised you’re still here this late,” Mrs. Potter said.

“Yes, we were in the attic, but we didn’t get the chance to really look around. I’m going back in the morning.”

Mrs. Potter nodded. “Are you looking for something in particular? Maybe I can help?”

For Kira, it was another sign, and since Mrs. Potter had been around for such a long time, she might know something. But would she tell her? “Mrs. Potter, can you come into my office for a second? I want to ask you some questions, if you don’t mind.”

“Of course, sweetheart. Whatever you need, if I have the answers, I will surely tell you.”

Kira smiled on the inside. She just might be able to tell Franklin something before they went to bed that night.

Inside the office, they took a seat next to each other in the matching armchairs. Kira needed to carefully word her question.

“How well did you know my aunt Sophia?”

Lorraine smiled. “Very well. She was such a beautiful young woman and my best friend.” Mrs. Potter looked lovingly at Kira. “You actually remind me a lot of her.”

“I’ve heard that before, but what about her and Franklin’s father, Charlie?”

Kira watched the older woman closely, and as soon as she mentioned Charlie Bennett, her eyes darted down. It didn’t mask the sadness in her expression.

She reached over and touched Mrs. Potter’s arm. “What’s the matter?” She searched the woman’s eyes until they connected. “You can trust me.”

Mrs. Potter placed her hand on top of Kira’s. “It’s not that at all.”

“What is it, then?”

“I’ve never known two happier young people in love. I’m telling you they were an inspiration to us all. Charlie was devoted to Sophie.” She smiled. “Some of us called her Sophie.”

“Do you know what happened?”

“I don’t think that’s something that you should be asking me, baby. You should talk to your aunt or even your father. He was here that day.
